When you start trading, it can be hard to know how often you should be trading. With the adrenaline that comes with putting trades on, many traders find themselves wanting to trade more and more. And overtrading inevitably leads to losses. So how often should you be trading? Read on to find out…

You must take steps to ensure you don’t overtrade

The answer is simple to this question: You should only put a trade on when your trading strategy tells you it’s the right time.

You shouldn’t be placing trades when the whim takes you or just because you’re itching to get back into the market.

You should only put a new trade on when your target levels tell you it is time, Max Munroe in Forex Round-Up explains.

If you ignore this and put on too many trades, the likely scenario is you losing money. This is the consequence of overtrading.

How to improve your trading success

This highlights a couple of traits that successful traders possess: Patience and discipline. By employing some patience and discipline, you won’t jump into every trade ‘just in case’. And you’ll have the strength of character not to enter a trade that you missed.

When you trade, one of the most important things is having capital to trade again. If you’re leaping into the market with little reason, you’re just asking to lose some, if not all, of your trading pot.

By only trading when your trading strategy’s signals tells you to, you’re in a better position to make money.

Successful trading all comes down to having a strict set of rules that you follow. Patience and discipline must form part of that strategy.

A handy tip to stop you trading too much

But if you really can’t stand the thought of staying out the market, try this…

Limit how many trades you will put on a week. For example, say you decide on five times. This means that you need to really think about placing your trades as you will only have five opportunities in one week.

So there you have it, how often you should trade.
